Scottsdale Recovery Center in North Scottsdale, Arizona, provides gender-segregated living spaces for its clients while they are treated in an upscale, peaceful treatment center.

While receiving treatment at Scottsdale Recovery Center, clients live at luxury “sanctuaries for sobriety” — homes run by managers who have personal experience with addiction and have been in recovery for many years. A variety of activities are part of everyday treatment at Scottsdale Recovery Center, including individual and group therapy, horse therapy, yoga, meditation and therapy through art. Clients are responsible for daily chores at home along with daily house meetings and trips to the gym. Clients are under full-time supervision, and biweekly drug testing is mandatory.

Scottsdale Recovery operates three houses in addition to its treatment center, the Miller House for women, the Turquoise House for men and the Pima House for those who have completed treatment but wish to stay in a structured recovery home. Though they are strictly gender-segregated, both facilities share similarly luxurious furnishings and atmosphere. Living spaces feature three group therapy sessions a week with licensed substance abuse counselors and therapists, individual counseling sessions relapse prevention workshops, daily gym trips, horse-assisted therapy sessions, weekly yoga, art therapy, detox services and more.

Each house also includes luxurious amenities such as upscale furnishings, healthful meals, a swimming pool, two washers and dryers as well as flat-screen TVs with cable.

Scottsdale Recovery Center uses evidence-based practices, as well as holistic and science-based treatments in addition to the traditional 12-step approach. Another contrast to typical addiction treatment centers is the separation of treatment and living spaces. Scottsdale Recovery Center believes clients should not be isolated in one facility, being treated in the same space in which they live. As such, clients are driven to the recovery center every day where they will receive treatment and take part in therapy. House managers drive clients to every destination — back and forth from the treatment center and to other outside activities including weekly recreation such as hiking, bowling and fishing.

Relapse Prevention Workshops
In order to reduce the risk of returning to drugs or alcohol, each client undergoes daily relapse prevention workshops. These workshops help clients recognize high-risk situations and can break patterns of thinking and behavior that lead to relapse. Clients are taught life skills and learn how to make the changes in their life that are necessary to maintaining sobriety after leaving the structure of Scottsdale Recovery Center. Avoiding relapse may necessitate major changes to be taken, even changing jobs or ending toxic friendships.

Equine Therapy
An essential component of recovery at Scottsdale Recovery Center involves finding strength and connection in horses through equine-assisted therapy. Interacting with a horse gives a person in recovery an outlet and a place to practice the self-control, discipline and decision-making skills needed to kick addiction. Horses can easily pick up on a person’s mood and attitude and the animal’s reactions can be read by a trained equine specialist and psychologist, giving professionals an insight into the client’s mind.

Equine therapy is also an arena in which the improvements being made in recovery can be applied to real life. In order for the horse to cooperate with the handler, a calm, controlled demeanor must be used — impatience or aggressiveness won’t get you very far with a horse.
